Todd Moore Memorial Scholarship Fund

  

Requirements:

Taylor County High Schools, Baird, Clyde, Eula and Robert Lee High School  participating in Golf Program Only

 

Deadline:

Information:

This fund honors Todd's memory by providing scholarships to high school golfers needing financial assistance to attend college.  Todd was a student at the University of Texas and a member of the Longhorn Golf Team at the time of his death.

The Chuck and Doris Moser Scholarship

 

Requirements:

Abilene, Cooper, or Wylie Senior Varsity Athlete

Information:
This scholarship honors the late Chuck Moser and his wife, Doris. Under Coach Moser's direction, the Abilene High football team won state championships in 1954, 1955 and 1956. Coach Moser was known for his high standards for integrity, academic performance and community service. A scholarship is awarded annually to Abilene, Cooper or Wylie High varsity athlete who demonstrates these attributes.

The Tillie Odam Memorial Scholarship Fund

 

Requirements:

Big Country High School Seniors or students currently enrolled in health care programs at a two or four year college

Information:

This fund assists students interested in pursing a degree in a health-related profession. It honors Mrs. Tillie Odam who was the director of Hendrick Hospital's Medical Record Technician School for 24 years. Established by Mrs. Odam's son, John, and her former students, the scholarship award will be determined by the scholarship committee of the Taylor-Jones-Haskell-Callahan County Medical Alliance.

Janet Parkey Memorial Scholarship Fund

 

Requirements:

Abilene High School Seniors

 

Deadline:

 Due April 1, 2010

 

Information:

This scholarship is awarded annually to an Abilene High School graduating senior who has been an outstanding citizen. The Fund was originally established as the Abilene High Class of 1997 Scholarship, but was renamed to honor Janet Parkey, a long-time teacher and administrator at Abilene High. .

Jane A. Rhodes Endowed Scholarship Fund

 

Requirements:

AHS, CHS or WHS Seniors who are members of Young Life

Deadline:

This scholarship is given every two to four years. If offered in year 2010-2011, the criteria and application will appear here. 

 

Information:

Established in 1996, this is a renewable scholarship which is awarded every fourth year. Eligible students are graduating seniors from Abilene High, Cooper or Wylie High Schools who were active members of Young Life and who wish to pursue their higher education at a public Texas university.

Zach Robinson Memorial Scholarship Fund

 

Requirements:

Abilene and Cooper High School Seniors

April 1, 2010

 

Information:

This memorial scholarship fund was established to honor Zach Robinson (1986-2006), a Cooper High School graduate who loved sports, especially golf and snow skiing.  This award is available to a graduating senior who has been enrolled a minimum of two years at Abilene or Cooper High and who plans to attend an accredited college or university.  Preference will be given to those students who have exhibited a sustained interest in golf and/or choir during their high school years.

Catherine Aileen Smith-Jones Memorial Scholarship

Taylor County High School Seniors who are also members of Holy Family Catholic Church

Information:

This fund was established to honor the life of a young woman who graduated from Cooper High School in 1976, and attended University of Texas in Austin. Cathy had an incredible spirit for life and a remarkable ability to overcome adversity. Even in death, she offered the gift of life through organ donations and tissue for research. This annual award is for members of the Holy Family Catholic Church.

Abilene High and Cooper High Seniors

Information:

This fund awards a scholarship to a student attending Texas Tech University. A recipient from each high school is chosen from graduating seniors at Abilene and Cooper High Schools who exhibit academic excellence and ability.

Taylor-Jones-Haskell-Callahan Medical Society Alliance Scholarship Fund

 

Requirements:

Applicants must be a resident of Taylor, Jones, Haskell, or Callahan County for at least one year and applicants may reapply.

Information:

This scholarship fund was established in the early 1970's as a result of Health Careers Day for students interested in the ancillary fields of medicine. Since that time, the Alliance has continued to support the scholarship cause. The purpose of the scholarships is to encourage Big Country students to pursue careers as physicians, nurses, and other heath care professionals. Yearly awards up to $1,000 are granted. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of scholastic ability, character, financial need, and school and community achievements.

Johnathan Tschaar Memorial Scholarship Fund

 

Requirements:

Taylor County High School Seniors who has been an exhibitor at the Taylor County Livestock Show.

Information:

This fund was established by friends of Johnathan Tschaar, a sophomore at Abilene High when he died in 1995. This scholarship is presented annually to a Taylor County high school senior

West Texas Hereford Association Curly Hays Memorial Scholarship

 

Requirements:

Big Country High School Seniors. Preference is given to a student who is a member of the Junior Hereford Association.

Information:

This fund was transferred from the West Texas Hereford Association to the Community Foundation. The Association will continue to choose the recipients of the scholarship that honors the memory of Curly Hays, late husband of Jean Hays. Curly was the farm and ranch representative for West Texas Utilities as well as a high school and Southwest Conference football referee. His work with 4-H and stock shows touched many young lives.

Information:

Many friends helped establish a fund in memory of Sara, Nancy and Steve's Abel's daughter and Ashley Abel's beloved sister who was tragically killed in an auto accident in 2003. At that time, Sara was classified as a junior at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas. An accomplished writer, Sara was editor-in-chief of the Abilene High School newspaper, The Battery, and majored in English Writing & Rhetoric at St. Edwards.

Taylor and surrounding counties who are planning to attend Texas A&M University at College Station.

Perry Bentley Memorial Scholarship Fund

 

Requirements:

McMurry Juried Art Show Winner

Information:

Friends of Perry Bentley, a former Abilene artist, established this fund after his early death in 1986. The fund provides a significant four year scholarship for the area high school senior who is selected as the winner of the annual juried art show at McMurry University.

Ruth and Bill Burton Memorial Scholarship

 

Requirements:

Abilene ISD Students who have maintained a minimum 85 GPA for their junior and senior years in high school.

This fund was established in memory of Ruth and Bill Burton who sought to support and financially help young people obtain further their education. This award is granted to Abilene ISD Senior who has a desire to continue their education and would not be able to without financial support.

Abilene High School Seniors who participate in varsity athletics.

Information:

This fund honors Roy Churchill's life as a husband, father, friend and athlete. Well known for his achievements as an Abilene High and ACU baseball player in the 1970's, Mr. Churchill's scholarship is awarded annually to an Abilene High graduating senior who participated in varsity athletics and demonstrates high Christian morals, leadership, academic achievement and a belief in hard work.

Abilene High School Seniors from an economically disadvantaged background who demonstrates promising academic achievement

Information:

This fund was established by Mrs. Denham's family in honor of her lengthy and valued career in the Abilene Independent School District. An award is made annually to a graduating Abilene High Eagle . Applications may be obtained from the AHS counselor or downloaded below.

Wilbur H. "Blue" Denham Memorial Scholarship

 

Requirements:

Abilene or Cooper High School Seniors

 

Deadline:

Due April 15, 2010

 

Information:

Established by Mr. Denham's family, this fund honors "Blue" Denham, a long-time Abilene resident, a chartered Life Insurance Underwriter from 1947 until 2000, and a 1940 graduate of Texas A&M. He was an active supporter of the West Texas Fair and Taylor County Expo Center. The Abilene Texas A&M Club Scholarship Committee recommends the recipient of this annual award to attend Texas A&M University.

Kemper Scott Hamilton Memorial Scholarship

 

Requirements:

Abilene High School student athlete who has exhibited leadership and initiative both on the playing field and in the classroom.

Scott Hamilton, an Abilene High graduate, lettered in two sports and was named to the All-State football team during his senior year. After his premature death in 1996, his friends established this fund to honor his memory. This fund was established in 2000 to award scholarships to outstanding Latino students in the Big Country area. - Award Rotates between AHS, CHS & WYLIE This fund was created in 1998 by the Independent Insurance Agents to honor a graduating senior from Abilene High, Cooper or Wylie who has exhibited interest and aptitude in the American free enterprise system. The award will be made to an Abilene High graduate for 2010-2011 academic year. Please contact your counselor to see if you qualify and if so, request to be considered.

Margaret Wheeler Kennedy Scholarship

High School graduates attending local designated Catholic Churches

Information:

The Margaret Wheeler Kennedy Scholarship was established by her children, R. Michael Wheeler, Gay Wheeler Gilroy, Susan Wheeler Johnson, and J. Greg Wheeler, to honor their mother and her commitment to children, Church and Education. This scholarship is available to a graduating senior who is in the top 25% of his/her graduating class and who attends one of these churches: Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Francis Catholic Church or St. Vincent Pallotti Catholic Church. The applicant must also have been regular attendees in the Church's religious education studies. If no applications are submitted from students attending the above listed churches, an applicant who attends the Holy Family Catholic Church may be considered for this award.

Information:

This scholarship honors the memory of Julius M. Kubena, a long-tome, Abilene resident who was employed with West Texas Utilities for over 37 years.  Applicants must be a graduating senior from Abilene High or Cooper High Schools and be in the top 25% of their class and be accepted by or enrolled in Abilene Christian University for at least 12 hours or be considered a full time student by ACU.
