OPTIMIST CLUB UNLIMITED “FACE OF OPTIMISM” AWARDS

  

Directions:

This student will be chosen by the counselor, given to a student who has overcome various difficult individual or educational obstacles to reach high school graduation. 

Award:

$250 will be given to one senior from each of 12 local and area high schools.

KOHL’S KIDS WHO CARE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM    

Directions:

To recognize and reward young volunteers.

Award:

More than $410,000 total scholarship and prize money will be awarded.

ROBERT BYRD HONORS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Directions:

Your counselor can select up to 3 nominees for this scholarship.

TEXAS TELEPHONE ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

Directions:

You must have a GPA of 3.0 and plan to attend a Texas college or university next year.  Special consideration will be given to students who will pursue a college degree in fields of study which are of particular interest to telecommunications, such as math, business, education, technology, engineering, and computer science.

Award:

Five four-year scholarships in the amount of $1,500 per year.

Mr. Martin can recommend two seniors.

LIVESTOCK DEPARTMENT MERIT AWARD SCHOLARSHIP from the West Texas Fair & Rodeo

Directions:

Will be awarded to a senior who is a member of a 4-H club or FFA chapter.  You must have participated in activities or contests in the Livestock Dept. of the West Texas Fair & Rodeo.

MODERN LIVING MALL MERIT AWARD SCHOLARSHIP from the West Texas Fair & Rodeo

Directions:

will be awarded to a senior who has participated in activities or contests in the Modern Living Mall Youth Department of the West Texas Fair & Rodeo.  You do not have to be a member of an FHA chapter.

CONTEST PERIOD: The Contest begins on November 19, 2008 and ends on March 6, 2009. Nominations may be submitted beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. Eastern Time on November 19, 2008 and must be received by 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Time on March 6, 2009.

ELIGIBILITY:  Applicant Eligibility: Person being nominated (“Applicant”) must be a legal resident of the 48 contiguous United States or the District of Columbia, who, as of November 6, 2008, is enrolled as full-time student in a state-accredited private or public high school, in good standing in grade 12, and who participates in a high school sport or club sport during the 2008-2009 school year, as determined by Sponsors in their sole discretion.  Applicants cannot be on suspension or other disciplinary program imposed by the school or school system at any time in the 2008-2009 school year. LULAC COUNCIL 605 SCHOLARSHIP

AMOUNT:  Applicants are eligible for the following three types of scholarship awards:


National Scholastic Achievement Awards ($2,000 and higher)
• The student has a GPA of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, and, if the student is an entering freshman,
• The student scores 29 or higher on the ACT test, or 1350 or higher on the SAT test.
Honors Awards ($500 to $2,000)
• The student has a GPA of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, and, if the student is an entering freshman,
• The student scores 23 or higher on the ACT test, or 1100 or higher on the SAT test.
General Awards ($250 to $1,000)

Grades and academic performance will serve as indicators of potential; however, emphasis may be placed on the individual’s motivation, sincerity, and integrity, which can best be revealed through a personal interview and in the personal essay. Need, community involvement, and leadership activities will also be considered.

CRITERIA:  Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for a scholarship:

AAFES RETIRED EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION (AREA) SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

GENERAL CRITERIA

2. Eligibility for AREA scholarships is outlined in the PERSONAL ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA and STUDENT ACADEMIC CRITERIA sections below. Once eligibility is met, five factors listed on the Application for Scholarship form are scored to determine the ranking for scholarship awards.

PERSONAL ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
(Must be met on January 1, 2009)

4. Applicants must be permanent U.S. residents and be less than 21 years of age. Other requirements are:

  1. They must be natural, legally adopted children or custodial stepchildren of active, retired or deceased AAFES or assigned military personnel.
  2. Military retirees must have retired while on assignment with AAFES.
  3. A deceased parent must have died while an active or retired AAFES employee or military assignee.
  4. One of the parents must have had at least twelve consecutive months of AAFES employment, or in the case of military personnel, AAFES assignment. For a deceased parent, the twelve-month employment requirement must have been met at the time of death.
  5. Twelve consecutive months of AAFES employment, if applying on their own behalf.
  6. Active membership in AREA, if retired. An active member is one who is a member of the national AREA organization (not just a member of an AREA Chapter) and whose dues payments are current.

  1. Be in their senior year of high school and scheduled to graduate in calendar year 2009.
  2. Have a score of at least 1,750 on the SAT or 25 on the ACT.
Plan on attending an accredited college, university, or one of the U.S. military academies for undergraduate studies in calendar year 2009. AREA scholarships are not awarded for participation in non-academic and certificate programs.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS:

6. Each year, the Scholarship Committee recommends the number of awards and their amounts to the AREA Board of Directors based upon available funds. For calendar year 2009, the AREA Board approved up to 12 scholarships for a program total of $36,500. Individual scholarship amounts are 2/$5,000, 1/$4,000 and 9/$2,500.

7. Scholarship amounts can be used to offset costs for academic related expenditures only. Such expenditures include tuition, fees, books, computers and software, and other expenses. The money cannot be used for personal expenses, housing or transportation. Any balance left at the end of the term may be carried over and used to offset similar expenses during subsequent terms.


AREA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: CALENDAR YEAR 2009

1. The purpose of this program is to provide freshman year college scholarships to high school graduating students who (a) Are related to active, retired or deceased AAFES employees and assigned military personnel, or (b) Work for AAFES themselves. This program is consistent with the AREA objective of community involvement.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES:

8. The Scholarship Committee consists of seven members who are responsible for:

  1. Publicizing the availability of the scholarships through the Exchange Post, AREA Newsletter and other media.
  2. Administering the scholarship program by processing all applications, and identifying those which are eligible or ineligible.
  3. Evaluating and scoring the eligible applications.
  4. Making award recommendations to the AREA Board.
  5. Announcing scholarship awardees in the Exchange Post, AREA Newsletter and other media.

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
9. You may obtain an application form by clicking here or send a written request to the Scholarship Committee, 7045 Rembrandt Dr. Plano, TX 75093. You can also send an e-mail request to gall.tom@verizon.net . The application submittal period begins January 1, 2009 and ends March 31, 2009.

10. Completed applications with required documentation must be submitted to the Scholarship Committee by email (Preferred Method) or by mail to one of the addresses in paragraph 9, above, and received or postmarked no later than March 31, 2009, the application deadline. Time extensions are not normally made. The eligibility of each applicant will be reviewed and validated. It is the responsibility of each applicant to make sure that all required information is received by the application deadline.
