Campus Awards

The Edwin and Agnes Jennings Teaching Excellence Awards will be Presented by

the Abilene Education Foundation at the Teachers in the Limelight Celebration

TLC TEACHER CHARACTERISTICS

A TLC Teacher must possess integrity and a love for teaching that spills into the classroom. Students of a TLC Teacher understand their teacher values being with them, which in turn kindles a desire to learn. A TLC Teacher draws upon tried and true methods but is willing and open to new ideas. This attitude suggests a TLC Teacher is an active part of the campus team and gives positive energy toward the goals set forth by the campus. There’s no computed age, experience level or gender for a TLC Teacher, but we all know one when we see one!

BASIC INFORMATION:
  1. Each campus, will select a TLC Teacher as the recipient of the Edwin and Agnes Jennings Teaching Excellence Award for that campus. This teacher will represent his or her campus at the first annual Teachers in the Limelight Celebration! on Monday, April 29, 2013. (EXCEPTIONS: 1.Cooper and Abilene High will each select two honorees. 2.There will be one honoree chosen to collectively represent all Pre K/Early Childhood campuses. 3.There will be one honoree chosen to collectively represent all magnet schools.)
  2. From this group of campus TLC Teachers, a selection committee will choose one Outstanding Elementary Teacher (Pre K-5) and one Outstanding Secondary Teacher (6-12) based on principal recommendation essays submitted for each honoree. The announcement of the recipients of these district-wide awards will be a highlight of the TLC evening.
  3. TLC Teachers will be recognized prior to the event (on campus, Abilene Reporter News, Channel 7, etc.), and will each receive $100 at the event.
  4. The Outstanding Elementary Teacher and Outstanding Secondary Teacher chosen by the selection committee will each receive an additional $1,400.
  5. Each campus TLC Teacher will be individually interviewed and filmed by Rob Westman to be shown on  AISD-TV Channel 7 and proudly recognized in the Abilene Reporter-News as AISD’s honored TLC Teachers.
  6. Honorees are encouraged to invite two guests to accompany them on April 29. Principals, of course, are important guests for the evening, as well!  The event will last no longer than two hours.
CAMPUS HONOREE SELECTION GUIDELINES:
  1. Principals will present a slate consisting of 3-6 deserving candidates to be voted on by fellow teachers. (Cooper and Abilene High will need 5-8 names on their slates since they are selecting two honorees.) Keep in mind that each slated nominee is a potential representative for your campus for the district-wide Outstanding Teacher Award.
  2. Once a campus TLC Teacher is selected, the principals will oversee the completion of a brief information sheet (we will send this to your email) for the honoree and complete an essay (one page or less) highlighting the honoree’s qualities and characteristics that make him or her an outstanding teacher.
  3. Principals may delegate the writing of the essay to another teacher, administrator or even parent who may better know the honoree and/or is a skilled writer.
  4. Honoree names, information sheet and essay are due to Phil Ashby at philip.ashby@abileneisdorg  no later than December 21. This will allow the TLC Selection Committee to make final selections and also give Mr. Westman time to complete the video for the TLC in April.
